For approximately a half century, Dick Moorman has been working with a chisel and a mallet, making thousands of wood masterpieces. He also recollects whittling with razor blades as a kid. In 1959, I started part time at Weberding ( Carving Shop ), working evenings from six to nine ( p.m. ) whilst still at Romwebers.

Since 1964, I started keeping records of my carvings, and Im past 29,000.

Thats documented, and I suspect I could turn that into The Guinness Book of World Records. Before 1964, I sort of did quite a lot of carving, but kept no records. Cambridge Diet I could add a thousand or so to that, the granddad of 9 reports. My fave woods to cut are walnut, mahogany and old yellow poplar. The secret of carving is the power to see the completed piece previously. He exposes not each carving has turned out right. One time I carved a 5-foot body of Christ that looked like Godfrey Cambridge, a comic from the 70s. I've had fights with table saws, band saws, a drill press, jointer disc, sander and chisels. I lost each fight and have the scarring to show. Using my hands gets me tendonitis, carpal tunnel, and hands that go to sleep at night. Infrequently I tell the faculty youngsters that when I am carving and the wood turns red that implies that I cut myself. Band-Aids are part of my diet as wood-carver. Though the friendly man has quite an inventory of items he has made thru the years, he has compiled a top ten list : panels for sides of altars, 2.5-foot-by-3.5-foot set of basswood stations, pieta from a photograph of the first, coffin for a woman who was planning to use it for an occasional table till she died, linen-fold altar, 10-foot tall myrtlewood granddad clock, carved vanity front for the Corsi Corp , Union Furniture patterns, sign patterns for CIP World and a model of a 350-pound man from waist to knees. ( or ) cook a pleasant meal, play music or sing. The gifts of others are just as crucial as anything I have done, the humble man recognizes. Though he retired from working full time Sept. I'll be working part time 2 days each week. My pop put in 52 years at Romwebers, so I may try and match that record. Bill Hum Weberding praises Moorman for his 49 years in this business. He is a wonderful worker with a good talent.
